BABEL_I
HTML translator for IBM-i WEB pages
by Giovanni B. Perotti (Italy)
Quick and safely translate your HTML stream files to other national languages

Manual translation of HTML scripts to another national language is not an easy job. Some HTML and Javascript skill is required, and even so there are chances of incidentaly making mistakes (such a wrong keystroke) that would damage script functions. Is is a tedious and difficult job, requires skilled personnel, is low, expensive and prone to human errors.
When the time comes for some maintenance, re-doing the translation job may become a nightmare. This is why some semi-automated translation tool is absolutely needed.

Babel-i highlights

  • HTML and Javascript transparency - HTML and javascript code are copied "as is" to the translated WEB page: the HTML/Javascript of the page is not changed. Only text strings are prompted for translation. No script corruption is ever possible and - most important - changes to HTML/javascript code have minimum impact on the translation cost.
  • Translation memory - Translated text strings are automatically saved into a "translation dictionary". Recurring strings containing the same characters (in the same WEB page)do not need to be translated again. This allows subsequent maintenance of a translated page to cost of just a few seconds.
  • CGIDEV2 support - CGIDEV2 special tags to identify "section" names and special delimiters to identify "output variables" are interpreted as part of the HTML/Javascript code and are fully preserved in the translation process.

Other features

  • Full IBM-i operation - The translation process is completely performed on the IBM-i; the translated objects are IFS stream files.
The translation is performed through a WEB page: the human translator is just requested to provide translation for text string not yet translated.
An IBM-i HTTP instance is provided with the tool.
  • Accessories - A number of WEB accessories are provided to support the administration of the translation process, such as
    • selection of the stream files to be translated from a directory list
    • inventory of the translated stream files
    • save/restore of parts of the "translation dictionary"
    • inventory of the save files
Some of this accessories are also available from traditional green screens.
  • National language of the tool - Babel_I itself comes in two national languages, English and Italian. The tool is already structured to support its translation to other national languages, an the tool can be used to translate itself.
  • Source code - The tool is distributed with its source code, mainly CL and RPG. Technical users may therefore provide suggested code for new features.

Prerequisites

  • a least V5R3; any subsequent release is welcome
  • ILE-RPG compiler (needed just during the installation of the utility)
  • HTTP server
  • Supported WEB browsers: Firefox, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Opera, Safari.

    This command
